Melanesian Papeda
Citrus macroptera
This unusual and ancient Citrus has such large winged petioles on its leaves that it has been mistaken for a kaffir lime in the past although when the fruits develop it is obviously a completely different plant.
The fruits are like large pears in shape and are extremely bitter. So bitter infact that it has been said that after tasting one it is hours before you can get rid of the bitterness!
In Samoa the leaves are macerated and mixed with water to make a soap for washing clothes and hair.
This extremely rare citrus is for the curious and the collectors.
