Citrus paradisi:
Discovered as a chance seedling in Florida in the 1860s this variety was notable for being seedless or nearly so.
Like most grapefruits it loves warmth and does well in a large greenhouse or conservatory but also works well placed outside for the summer.
The fruit hangs on for months and months when ripe and usually takes well over a year to ripen here.
Grapefruits are also known as pomelo trees.
